Yellow Pages Günter Puller

Art_and_Animation 2nd EditionYellow Pages | 2006 | 1:52 min | 4:3 | color | stereo I found the Yellow Pages in the wood during an excursion. I thought of the natural
process of disintegration. I decided to take the phone book with me and deconstruct it
in an artistic context. In a studio a copy of the Yellow Pages, found in the woods and falling apart, is filmed with a steady camera position. It is an artificial process of decay, filmed with a time-lapse photography, which is produces in the studio, which is faster than the natural one in the woods would have been. The Yellow Pages are taken as a symbol of our social, cultural and commercial life. To find such a book in the woods seems to be significant for our present life.

Teresa Rick Niebe

A digital hommage to L. Bernini’s "The ecstasy of St. Theresa" 1652 As well as an hommage to personal influences, I wanted to see behind the digital deconstruction of these anonymous images the instability, the loss of entierity, the ambiguity the endless tension between "real" and "art-ificial", visible and unvisible, of the Baroque. I have searched, in the algorithmic grid and the mosaic of characters, the erotism, the confused sensuality of the bodies against the mainstream pornographic high definition.

Corner, Los Angeles Joe Merrell

Art_and_Animation 2nd EditionCorner, Los Angeles was shot downtown on the corner of 5th and Broadway. The original shot was broken up into a 6x4 grid with each of the squares temporally offset from one another (left/right – top/bottom). Time is compressed and multiple moments are seen simultaneously. This piece was originally created to be part of a 4-channel installation, though it has been exhibited separately in a number of festivals and galleries.

To knock itself Natalia MetamorphoZ

To knock itself is a video performance realized in 2004 and finished in 2006. This performance is based on the sentence of Georges Perec: To live is to pass from a space to the other while as much as a possible trying not to knock itself. A woman with the bandaged eyes circulates in a warehouse in an unpredictable way. She crosses, climbing, penetrates, in elements left with the abandonment in the space of storage of decorations of spectacles and others… The sentence of Perec circulates and is knocked the words explode and scatter. We don’t no, where the snake letters go like the blind woman in the video. The purpose is to try not to knock it…to live what is impossible

Untitled (Song) Alex Pearl

Art_and_Animation 2nd EditionThis is a follow up to a piece made on location in a bar in Amsterdam using a lollipop stick. It is part of a number of spur of the moment videos made in the last few years. It is an empty film avoiding narrative, insight or closure. "Two upright lollipop sticks, each with three marks on one side, turn around to show three marks on the other side. The three marks, like all three drawn marks, take on the appearance of two eyes and a mouth. As the lollipop sticks turn, on one side the mouth is a line, a closed mouth. On the other side the mouth is a small black circle, an open mouth. The lollipop sticks turn back and forth and the mouths open and close, singing the saddest and most plaintive song, something once heard in the distance in an ancient French film – Les Enfants du Paradis or La Ronde. Unlike those classics, almost every aspect of this film is almost nothing, and yet that is why it is so haunting and so memorable. It feels like an empty dream." (Lynda Morris, excerpt from Drawing Links Catalogue, 2006)

Little Death 2 Alex Pearl

Art_and_Animation 2nd EditionThe films show close ups of what he describes as ‘non-reversible state changes’: a match igniting and burning down, an aspirin dissolving in a glass, a balloon deflating. In each case the object has been given two dots and a line, the absolute minimum to evoke a face. The dots are not eyes, the line is not a mouth, yet the aspirin acquires a sinister personality, continuing to glare out from the glass as its eyes dissolve and enlarge into the eye-sockets of a skull. In the same way, the balloon’s slow deflation from plump jiggling certainty to flaccid impotence becomes full of pathos, particularly given the minimal soundtrack: apart from one balloon which bursts with a bang, the awful change is endured in silence. It is as though the line and dot face is a spell which acts on us even though we know it shouldn’t; this bleak, persuasive magic performed with minimal resources also occurs in the work of American poet Charles Simic, for example, Austerities: From the heel
Of a half loaf
Of black bread,
They made a child’s head. Child, they said,
We’ve nothing for eyes,
Nothing to spare for ears
And nose. Just a knife
To make a slit
Where your mouth
Ought to be. You can grin,
You can eat,
Spit the crumbs
Into our faces. [Lawrence Bradby, 2007]

Little Death 6 Alex Pearl

Art_and_Animation 2nd EditionFor “little death 6” I released a balloon into a bleak industrial estate car park. Just as I stopped filming a young woman came out of one of the units for a break. Not noticing me, she dashed after the balloon and rescued it. I retreated into my building and secretly filmed her as she sat holding the balloon looking at its face. After a few minutes she got up and returned to work taking her new friend with her. I was delighted by the way my intentions for the film were wrested from me by this chance event.

Aliage - Viajes en Technicolor Timo Christian Huber

Art_and_Animation 2nd Edition"Aliage - Viajes en Technicolor" it's a music promo shot in Hong Kong for the Argentine band Aliage. This super8 short film is a journey around an asian city that could be "any asian city", since the meaningful part is the discovery of a mix of ancient culture and technology through the eyes of the tourists. And exploration around simple discovery and naive tourism, where the high-tech feeling of places like Hong Kong is only suggested by NTSC bars that blend seamless in the landscape and the friendly locals.

36:55:17 / 4 elements, op. 137, 1-4 / 2006 Wittwulf Malik

Art_and_Animation 2nd EditionThis music video focuses on the four elements and more particularly on the forms of energy which are active within each of these elements. It also thematises the ways in which humanity relates to these forces, how it makes use of them for creative or destructive purposes. Fire in this context is therefore also seen as light energy .
Each part is dedicated to one element and lasts about 9 minutes, the total duration of the video being approximately 36:55:17 minutes.
The visuals were produced by means of normal video recordings (either left as such or digitally altered). Furthermore, digital photographs were included (some of which were also altered digitally).
The music contains a number of acoustic sounds including cello, piano, organ, metal sound sheets, gongs and metal wire, as well as digitally-altered cello and trombone sounds and electro-acoustic and electronic sounds. The visuals (photographs and video sequences) were all made, recorded and mixed or digitally altered by me. The same goes for the sounds and the pieces of music (original recordings of nature sounds, electronic music, instrumental parts – apart from one short trombone sequence in “W.A.T.E.R.” which I however reworked digitally later).

Illuminated Breath Brigid Burke

Illuminated Breath Brigid Burke 2006 Air sounds and interwoven rhythms depicting races against time and reaching the finishing line are the bases of " Illuminated Breath ". It uses air and rhythmic forces from the Javanese Gamelan interlaced with clarinet and air sounds to create this energetic and pulse driven work. A layer of processed improvisations from the clarinet and voice dances above an intense and thick rhythmic pulse in a relaxed manner. The visuals take you to a place with snapshots of both Asian and Australian cityscapes capturing and entwining abstract illusions of people, buildings and flowers as if there is a race against time but a peacefulness of acceptance.

Study for the invisible girl Alex Pearl

Art_and_Animation 2nd EditionAll moveables of wonder, from all parts,
Are here--Albinos, painted Indians, Dwarfs,
The Horse of knowledge, and the learned Pig,
The Stone-eater, the man that swallows fire,
Giants, Ventriloquists, the Invisible Girl,
The Bust that speaks and moves its goggling eyes,
The Wax-work, Clock-work, all the marvellous craft
Of modern Merlins, Wild Beasts, Puppet-shows,
All out-o'-the-way, far-fetched, perverted things,
All freaks of nature, all Promethean thoughts
Of man, his dulness, madness, and their feats
All jumbled up together, to compose
A Parliament of Monsters. Tents and Booths
Meanwhile, as if the whole were one vast mill,
Are vomiting, receiving on all sides,
Men, Women, three-years' Children, Babes in arms. Wordsworth's description of Bartholomew Fair (from The Prelude, Book 7. 1805, lines 706 - 721) I had recently become interested in Wordsworth’s description of Bartholomew fair. Tucked away on the fifth line is the invisible girl, to me she seemed out of place among the giants and wild beasts.

Learning to Play How High the Moon Yeon Choi

An experimental collaboration in which poem and animation play out a parallel conversation, independent of but echoing each other’s concerns.
The animation delineates a personal journey—a spiritual search among the landscapes of the mind. In the meantime, the text unfolds a very specific crisis of mind—the discovery of, and coming to terms with, a complex failure, too deeply comprehended.

The Chequered Tunnel Barbara Agreste

Art_and_Animation 2nd EditionThe Chequered Tunnel is a animation made entirely with 3D software.
This short movie represents a fragmented space made of a chequered tunnel where the squares that fill its walls, floor, and ceiling alternate from red to white (the colour red is a metaphor for trauma).
At the opening of the piece the point of view of the spectator (the camera) is turning on itself in a chequered room with a missing wall leading to a black void. The camera moves back and forward unsure if to dive into the unknown darkness, or to stay in the trapping room with no other exits. Once the camera makes its move into the dark void, it suddenly encounters a chequered woman (her skin looking like the surrounding space reminds us of the chameleon's mimicry) that soon goes out of the frame to enter a tunnel full of curved metal surfaces and mirrors. This trip into a fragmented reality full of intense lights and reflections that, like obstacles, have to be avoided, and that are almost blinding, ends into a bigger room which looks like a real chessboard where a chess piece with a woman's head on its top (The Queen), trapped into a muddle of slowly moving worms, turns on itself while other objects nearby - a dice, and some bishops rest motionless. The atmosphere of this place is surreal, the camera at one point turns away from The Queen and moves forward towards a cylindrical container with some illegible words printed on it, before moving into the dark exit of the room.
