City Paradise Gaelle Denis

Experimental 2nd EditionGaelle Denis initially draws a gray, desolate picture of the metropolis, depicting it as an intimidating presence. And so it is with Tomoko, a young Japanese girl who comes to London to learn English. At first, she doesn't like it a bit there.
She hardly even leaves the house. But that changes radically when, quite by accident, she discovers a mysterious, secret underground city below London, a place that's colourful and friendly.
In the wake of this experience, she meets a lot of new friends, learns English and makes one wonderful discovery after another. Gaelle Denis is 31 years old. She was born in France and moved to London in 2000 to study at the Royal College of Art. Part of the CultureTV program

Santa Fe + LG Zanzibar + Riverfront Highrise Jesse L Bellon

Experimental 2nd EditionBellon’s video work addresses themes of urban space, and its affects on the subject “through mimicking the jarring, repetitive, and fragmented nature of 'postmodern' society. They combine the harsh reality of the world with the dreamlike reality in our minds, portraying simultaneously the actual and the idealistic.”
-J. Schultz, The Lance, November 2006 This video is part of the Life Is Good™ series that was explored during Jesse’s MFA at York University. The videos themselves explore the nature of contemporary urban space and perception. The everyday urban experience is revealed; where one not only navigates through the physical city, but also through one’s thought processes, afterimages, as well as the virtual information all around us. Through the pairing of recognizable imagery with intense color, texture, rhythm, repetition, and pixilation, a tableau emerges where typical spatiotemporal elements are collapsed—boundaries between the conscious and the subconscious fragments and the actual and virtual merge.
Repetition is used to convey repetition in the everyday: mass production, suburban sprawl, architecture, and ‘copycat’ violence….etc. The intense repetition mimics advertising tactics, changing the viewer inwardly; blasé, anxiety, alienation, meditative...are states that are experienced by the viewer. The brightness of the projection also leaves traces of afterimages (closed eye visuals), much like the bright city at night.
Exhibited as large-scale projection, these works trap the viewer in a super-concentrated, media-saturated, urban spectacle extracted from the everyday. video.saatchigallery.com/artist..

Portrait #2 Jerry Galle

Inventions for memory Inventions for memory consists of four separate parts. In all four pieces the film surface is treated with algorithms resulting in a painting with light. A process that links the imagery closely to that of Fox Talbot and Niepce, the founders of photography, whose work on the sensual interface of a new technological expression were to influence the basic representation of the art object. The ghosts of early cinema are equally never far away, this video is mining the connections to the past on celluloid and photographic representation. The surface is equally influenced by sound synthesis, where the data of the sound breaks down or hides the images, creating new and exciting connections between sound and visuals. Inventions for memory is far removed from the sophistication of cinematic codes of narrative and representation, instead it returns to the sensual essentialism of film seen as an object. 21.04.02 Jean-gabriel Périot

Experimental 2nd EditionThe 21st of april 2002 was the day of the first round of the presidential elections. One the two elected candidates is the far right politician Jean-Marie Le Pen.
When the result were announced, I was overwhelmed by so many emotions : an irretrievable turning point. One of those very few moments when one feels that one is really living history. But unfortunately, history at its blackest.
That very night was also the night my close friends organised a birthday party for me.

Story of Lovers on a Train Gad Hollander

The predominant image of this work is a night-time view of a landscape shot through a train window. A series of inter-titles and a selection of cutaway shots from various sources combine to create the “story” of the title.
A different set of inter-titles over the same image-sequence would produce a different story; conversely, the same inter-titles superimposed on another sequence of images would give us virtually the same “story” but in a different setting.
Either way, the story is neither explicitly seen nor told but is a construct of our imagination that takes place off-camera and between the lines. What we see, hear and read is a collection of audio-visual elements rhythmically edited to suggest a plausible drama – a passion, a romance, a tragedy or a farce.

Chekhov Sean Burn

Experimental 2nd Editionillness hospitalised me, made me homeless; on discharge i was placed in temporary accommodations. to stay well i created art reflecting my experiences; chekhov references how the arts / finding commonalities with other artists and not a physical building / structure are my true home. the film uses visual cut-ups animated in an act of art-brut that parallels the poetry and soundwork that form the aural track. chekhov incorporates culture-jamming techniques in my work, reclaiming / reworking / subverting existing material that tries insisting we buy into narratives i dont recognise. radical antipsychiatrists, deleuze/guattari talk about the lines ov our life - both the formal ones - the interstices - & also the more subliminal, curved lines that mark more personal, unique voyages. i follow these more subliminal, unique lines in chekhov

Will and Wallace Diran Lyons

Experimental 2nd EditionDiran Lyons’ short film "Will and Wallace" is both a poetic and anthropological investigation into the tension, pleasure, and linguistic interrogation of an opponent that often accompanies competitive behavior. The film centers on the playful harassment of two individuals - Wallace Franklin and William Patrick Shaffer - who are engaged in a game of pool. The film highlights their ludic use of aggressive and violent phrases/terms. Except for the closing sequence which incorporates real-time audio for the first time, the film’s overall silence strips these aggressive utterances of their audible context, making a viewer concentrate on the narrative visually, read lips, and search for the subliminal circles which are inscribed just for an instant around the mouths of the players. These isolate the uses of metonymic expression, drawing our attention to words, phrases, and sentences whose content is in total discord with their literal meaning.

East t(w)o West Irena Paskali

"It seems that all my life I'm dancing on a wire stretched between two fortresses."
Departure: The trip from East to West. It is always like a stretched rope which is unsecured and you can easily fall and get lost. The rope merges, serves for transport, but it is not secured. Arrival: I want to present the impact of the political information which simply traps us, limit us. Here are meaningful social-political scenes starting from the past up to today. Politic is everything for us. It is morning, noon, evening, mum, dad.. It is our life's circulation. Survival: East arrived in the West. Bare footed. Will he loose himself, or has he found his better road? A question to which I personally do not have an answer, what do you think about that?

Stealing brecht Sean Burn

Experimental 2nd EditionStealing brecht explores rituals of healing and asks how we can create moments of hope and compassion in the face of oppression. i remember first engaging with human rights when i was around 13. this was via a series of short films featuring specific cases of human rights abuses from across countries and cultures highlighted by amnesty international. what brought it home more was that due to chronic mental-ill health which first manifested itself around then i was taken to an adolescent psychiatric unit & detained there, building a bridge between my own oppression and others. i have always created work as an escape route but found myself so oppressed by recent detention under the mental health system that i could not. these last 3 years have been a journey for me and i am now emerging again and re-engaging artistically with the world. the film was created thanks to a medialab pva residency has received many screenings around europe.

H-10. One Red C. Alberto Damas Guerreiro

Experimental 2nd EditionH-10 a visual essay tribute to the group known as the Hollywood Ten: professionals of the cinematographic industry that, in 1947, refused to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The video-cut goes through the themes of freedom of choice and the pros and cons of the politics in cinema. Ten men; ten years; one red C (circle, channel, cinema). During 10 years it was denied to them the possibility to create freely and even to sign there work. These year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the decline of the blacklist politic that listed 151 entertainment industry professionals (also known as the "red channels blacklist"). By the way, the courageous 10 were: the directors Herbert Biberman and Edward Dmytryk, the producer Adrian Scott and the screenwriters Lester Cole, Albert Maltz, Samuel Ornitz, Dalton Trumbo, Ring Lardner Jr, John Howard Lawson and Alvah Bessie.
