Fragments

Fragments brings together video work that in some way address the idea of fragmentation, whether through visual technique or concept. Several films in this selection focus of the object of the photograph - a reminiscent of a fraction of time and memory. Others are based on the structural elements of film making such as the close up shot and abstraction as the basis.

This selection is the curator's response the truly eclectic collection of works from three editions of Streaming Festival database. Therefore, the concept of Fragments becomes an ambiguous expression in this context simultaneously symbolising a fragment of the Streaming Festival collection as well a metaphor for fragmentation of images and ideas.

Pangaea   Nicholas Economos

Pangaea arises from a reflection on physical forces, machines and corporeality and Bateson’s notion of seeking the patterns that connect Technical Statement: The animation for Pangaea was created on my home computer using consumer software and the sound was produced using analog synthesizer modules.

Portrait #2   Jerry Galle

Inventions for memory Inventions for memory consists of four separate parts. In all four pieces the film surface is treated with algorithms resulting in a painting with light. A process that links the imagery closely to that of Fox Talbot and Niepce, the founders of photography, whose work on the sensual interface of a new technological expression were to influence the basic representation of the art object. The ghosts of early cinema are equally never far away, this video is mining the connections to the past on celluloid and photographic representation.

The surface is equally influenced by sound synthesis, where the data of the sound breaks down or hides the images, creating new and exciting connections between sound and visuals. Inventions for memory is far removed from the sophistication of cinematic codes of narrative and representation, instead it returns to the sensual essentialism of film seen as an object. Illuminated Breath   Brigid Burke

Illuminated Breath Brigid Burke 2006 Air sounds and interwoven rhythms depicting races against time and reaching the finishing line are the bases of " Illuminated Breath ". It uses air and rhythmic forces from the Javanese Gamelan interlaced with clarinet and air sounds to create this energetic and pulse driven work.

A layer of processed improvisations from the clarinet and voice dances above an intense and thick rhythmic pulse in a relaxed manner. The visuals take you to a place with snapshots of both Asian and Australian cityscapes capturing and entwining abstract illusions of people, buildings and flowers as if there is a race against time but a peacefulness of acceptance.

Seven AV Studies   Debra Fear

These are a selection of experimental audio-visual pieces from my ongoing digital sketchbook; they are like a charcoal study is to a completed painting. Light, form and object are elevated from the commonplace to the extraordinary by audio auto-suggestion.
As observational vignettes, captured on the serendipity of the moment, they inform my practice through this investigation of how the alchemy of sound influences the eye.

Study on human form and humanity #01   Lemeh 42

This work has been first shot as a video performance on a theater stage, then it has been edited digitally. the title in fact refers to both the two phases of the work. as a recorded performance this work reflects on the human form. we have created a coreography based on the movements and positions of a sleeping body.
when a body is asleep it turns around like it is attempting to spin.
moreover, we have considered dreams as a determining factor that conditions the body movements.
digitally we have flatten the body on an old piece of paper.
the extreme importance of the piece of paper lies on the fact that this paper has been used by a person to write his/her dream.
the act of writing a dream is the clear manifestation of the uncertainty in which the human being lives his/her own existence and therefore his/her humanity.

Man-made weather part 2 (lighthouse)   Agnes Evon Szelag

This is the second part to a longer piece named "man - made weather". at the time i was struggling with the environmental issues of working in electronic media. i became fascinated with the juxtaposition of the human body (myself) and oil refineries. i wanted to see if it was possible to create meaning and beauty with these two completely different ideas as i transform the body into the space and light of the refinery.

East t(w)o West   Irena Paskali

"It seems that all my life I’m dancing on a wire stretched between two fortresses."
Departure: The trip from East to West. It is always like a stretched rope which is unsecured and you can easily fall and get lost. The rope merges, serves for transport, but it is not secured.

Arrival: I want to present the impact of the political information which simply traps us, limit us. Here are meaningful social-political scenes starting from the past up to today. Politic is everything for us. It is morning, noon, evening, mum, dad.. It is our life’s circulation.

Survival: East arrived in the West. Bare footed. Will he loose himself, or has he found his better road? A question to which I personally do not have an answer, what do you think about that?

Truth - Paradise Found   Wilfried Agricola de Cologne

The video tells the story of the human desire to be as close to truth as possible. But who ever will succeed while living a life dominated by the fast running time and endless searching? If there is any paradise, then monks or people really resting within themselves find a paradise close to truth close to GOD. But it is only truth people are believing in.

Is there absolute truth? The video consists of three sections, a spiritual and a physical section and the acting level, the artist who is filming the scene, an intruder who become witness of a ritual of truth.

Please stop   Alex Pearl

I like to work quickly on suddenly apprehended ideas, and often use video as a parallel activity to drawing. Many of my shorter video pieces have a lot in common with automatic drawing in that I set up situations where chance plays a large part in the outcome.

These pieces are also comparable with the idea of the sketch or doodle, an initial, throwaway idea made visible. Sometimes these video drawings are developed into ideas for more substantial pieces often they are left to fend for themselves.
