Joćo Krefer - Home
Home is a gentle piece that explores a complicated and sensitive issue of suicide. Seeing this work once again reassured me that my choice to watch films prior to reading descriptions pays off. My first impression was that the video would continue looping this simple action of smile turn ...over and over until the image is almost still. The first glimpse of a weapon suggested a shooting toward someone or something, yet his turning of the gun to his own head was a surprise. Within the few seconds the viewer is taken through a whole range of emotions from joy to uncertainty and decision making with a glimpse of regret in protagonist’s eyes. There is no feeling of upcoming tragedy.
This is a subtle piece which leaves you wondering - was it staged or could this be an ingeniously captured piece of documentary? Holding away any extraneous information by coming close up (as well as using non-diegetic sound) keeps the focus on minute detail communicating what could be the last chance to choose between life and death brilliantly.
Look forward to seeing parts two and three.
