Borahm Kim - Shoulder to shoulder (2012)
This work started while surfing through internet reading news about Iraq War. I saw a picture of Korean soldiers sent to Zaytun Division in Northern Iraq. Then I realized the soldiers were all smiling in the photo. How could they? Well, the main task of the troop in that photo was to provide medical and engineering service so they had rare chance of going into battlefield. So, I started looking for photos of fighters sent to the War. They were smiling, too. Were they able to smile because it was their job and everyday life? What could be in the minds of the people heading to battlefield? What are their real feelings? What are they really fighting for? These thoughts brought the idea of ĹWhat if the fighters around the world gather to take a huge group photo'? I searched on the list of Wars from year 2000 until present time. And sorted the countries participated in the war to search for group photos of soldiers and fighters. First I started google for photos but soon realized there weren't many pictures except for soldiers from the Western such as troops by US and NATO. Then I could find some pictures of fighters from Arab and Africa from images hosting sites such as Flickr. There were people uploading their reality (some very brutal). I erased all the background images photos. Only the soldiers were placed to become a very long group photo. For the background sound I collected the news related to the pictures. I looked for stories of soldiers, rebels, civilian, politicians at war. There were also stories behind the scene, and happening that were hard to understand. The sounds of the news were placed to match the image. On this group photo I added some effects. The effects were the images arose while collecting the pictures of solidiers and listening to the news. I wanted the add 3d moving images to add depth to the photos. This is a photo image consist of individual facts but it is an impossible scenery as a group. -Borahm Kim-
I Thank To All The People In The Pictures and Who Took Them. Although They Would Not Know Probably, I Will Try To Be A Better Artist To Express The Truth and Let People Rethink About The Reality In War Zone.
