Coppice - Circumpass

6:25, 2013, Video Art
Circumpass is a non-narrative glance at visual and sonic elements that outline four years of our collaborative work as Coppice. The images roam over objects, fragments, drawings, and abstractions corresponding to our instrumentation, and sculptural work. The soundtrack wades through motifs and gestures from many different compositions between 2009 to 2013 - recounting a fractured trajectory of Coppice’s sound palette.

What is Coppice?

Coppice is nexus. We’ve been working together since 2009, composing works for sound including installations, recordings, performances, sculptural objects, instruments, and visuals.

Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts you use and what is important to you?

Our sound palette has a foundation in bellows and electronics.

Do you carefully plan the production process or do you work more intuitive?

Our work is largely a documentary process in that we are constantly setting up productions, but the organization of the outcomes is not a direct result of the planning. We work often and on multiple projects and try to capture everything.

How does the title "Circumpass" relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?

Titles are very important. Once you pick the right words you can create a special entryway to the work besides the work itself. With this project we’re creating a visual entryway into our sound. "Circumpass" implies a way of looking into, while moving around where something is happening and something has happened.

How important is sound in film?

Maybe this is a backwards question for Coppice. A more important question would be about the importance of visuals in this piece, as the sound is the foreground. All images correspond to elements of our sound work, and the sound is a fractured trajectory spanning four years of compositions, since we started collaborating to date.

Where would you place your work; cinema or art?

How about sound?

What is your next project about?

Right now we’re interested in layers of time and attention. Our upcoming projects in early 2014 are "Soft Crown", a CD release, and "Soft Crown Transparencies", a software application that the listener can use to navigate through layers of our music.
