Liesbeth Verhoeven - Mijn op de heidelpenn

3:20, 2004

Interview

Who is Liesbeth Verhoeven?
I am an artist. The techniques I use are drawing, graphics, costume making, performances and film. My work is quite conceptual and narrative and often deals with the paradox of at the same time longing for freedom and for real contact with others. The origin/development of language and communication play an important role in my art.

Your film is about?
Listening to the dream language of Finnegan’s Wake, a novel by James Joyce, I made drawings that try to catch the meaning of the sentences. To show this experience, I made the drawings anew but this time as a ’growing’ animation. Then, while watching the animation, I read the text aloud to fit with the drawings, that means on the rhythm of the drawings. At some places I adjusted the texts to better fit the drawings.

How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
’Mijn op de Heidelpenn’ is my first film. I don’t have an educational background. As an artist, you educate yourself most of the time.

Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts and what is important to you?
See the first question.

How does content relate to the form of your film?
See the second question.

How did the film come about? Everything (carefully) planned or more intuitive?
It started very intuitive, but when I decided to translate it into an animation film, I planned everything very carefully.

How do you finance your projects (by yourself, sponsors or subsidy)?
By myself.

New Media; a challenge for film makers?
I’m not a real film maker, I do things quite ’old-fashioned’, so for me new media is not a challenge, actually I feel some resistance to it. I love art (and films) that is made very directly, in which you can almost see how it’s made.

YouTube? Why or why not?
It’s OK, but I seldom use it.

Does your work often circle the festival circuits, and do you visit festivals regularly?
No.

Do you often meet and discuss with other film makers through the internet?
No, never, but I’m not a real filmmaker. I do discuss with other artists though, but most of the time this is real life, not through the internet.

How influential is the reaction to your film by the audience?
Very influential. It can break or make me. Normally it helps me further, it inspires me to improve, to explore other ways and subjects etc. I love interaction and discussion with other artists!

What is your next project about?
My next film will be about returning borrowed things to the right owner, with the purpose getting rid of this burden.
