Who are Claudia Ruiz and Gijs Verkoulen?
Claudia Ruiz and Gijs Verkoulen are both of the age 26 and share a background in graphical design. The went to different schools for graphical design for four years and then met each other at the art academy Utrecht (audio visual design) were they became partners in filmmaking. A duo known as odd and seen.
Why filmmaking?
Filmmaking proofed itself as the most ideal way to extend your fragments of imagination.
Trans is about...
’Trans’ is a 25-minute documentary about a journey by train from Moscow to Beijing. On board of the famous Trans Siberian express the film passes by the fascinating visuals of extreme differences in countryside, travellers and natives. During this 7 day journey we experience how the eye and the mind change the perspective as the hours go by. From an alert objective view from start we leap over to a subjective view on the end. When in the beginning traditional views come to
The screen, on the end the viewer sees what the timeframe of this journey changes in the alertness of the eye. As time goes by shifting of railway tracks and power lines get fascinating, you will get delirious as the Gobi dessert passes by and by, and you will see the beauty of light as it passes
Like a stroboscope through the compartments. ’Trans’ is a visual poem that shows a new view on a journey everybody has heard of. Finally the viewer can really experience how it is to make a journey on the longest railway track on earth, from start to finish.
Financing your movie?
Trans was for a small part subsidised by Xchange, a department within the Academy of Arts Utrecht. The Journey we had to take with the trans Siberia express in order to make trans was sponsored by tiara tours. The rest of the finance was on our own behalf.
New Media; a challenge for film makers?
New media, definitely, is not overrated. New media forms a new medium with its whole new Target group. For one new media can bring alternative art to youngers who form a big user group of new media. Second of all, new media brings a new meaning to globalisation of arts; for better or for worse we are all out there to be seen.
Do your films have style, just as some painters have?
Films are most definitely subject of authorisme. A filmmakers has an equally unique signature on its work as a painter or a writer would have. Stated that film is a unique extension for your own fragments of imagination, its your unique creation.
Our combined style always tries to bring the essence of perception to the screen.
Influences?
For Gijs, David Linch has always bin a unique example that its not only possible to create your own imagination, but to bring that imagination in the most aesthetic form. For myself I can only state that i found myself inspired by all that is around my. I don’t have my share of idols and I most
Say that sometimes I even think that my lack of it, stranger my pure essence of perception.
Which film related websites do you frequent?
Gijs likes to visit the Belgium site http://www.Humo.be a lot because of it’s sheer of critical reviews. For myself I can state to visit http://www.nftvm.nl at least once a day to stay informed on what’s going on.
Individual film making or co-operation?
We both prefer individual filmmaking, but embrace co-operation’s as well. Individual film has its own way to optimal trigger yourself from start to finish to do it all your self, because of that we both like to handle the camera ourselves and to edit our own movies. But co-operation always bring
A unique experience as well for its crossroad binding of talents and skills of a different group of people.
In the future...
At this moment I’m trying to find financial means for new concepts. Not only do I want to produce a new documentary but I’m also trying to start the productions of a short fiction and a surrealistic visual poem. Gijs is, for the moment, embracing his old favourite habit of graphical design.
Did you ever had another ambition in life than to become a filmmaker?
As said Gijs loves graphical design as well, for myself I must say that I found in filmmaking the unique combination of all the art forms I endure.
Digital or classic?
’Digital’ forms the perfect way to put obstacles to make a film aside. Due to this digital era it has become cheaper and easier to make a film. There for you can produce more, there for learn more and there for in the end..bring the best of your self.
