Mia Dahye Kim - Urban Garden

7:10, 2015

<Urban Garden> displays the long relationship humans have had with nature throughout history; while being juxtaposed against a modern city garden.
The artificial miniature version of a forest is surrounded by buildings and roads. In the middle of the urban forest two mirrors set up a stage; as it lures characters from different times and places.
The two mirrors split the screen while connecting images from within and out of frame, creating a surreal atmosphere which transcends time and space. The theatrical settings provide a main stage where all the characters enter and perform. As we observe each character’s unique performance, we are shown different perspectives of people on nature; as well as the conflicts between humans and nature. This theme is illustrated by the varying characters and their different cultural backgrounds. This urban garden becomes a place where humans can express emotions upon repression as well as liberation. This is a project of an experiment on visual storytelling without using sound. It combines theatrical performance elements with cinematic narrative form.
