Who is Corrine Bot?
When I left highschool I didn’t know what to do, so I stayed home for one year, doing nothing at all. Then I studied Psychology at the University in Leiden for six years, and when I finished that, I still didn’t know what to do. After a couple of years I studied Graphical Design and there I developed an interest in art, so after that I went to the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam (by now you may be thinking how old I am. I am 33). And finally I discovered what I had to do with my life… making movies!
Why filmmaking?
Within my films I can express myself. I do this not directly, but with a lot of symbolism. The world in which I live is very ordinary, just as I am. That is why in my head I try to make up other, more interesting worlds. Worlds where things happen that cannot stand the light of day.
My work is about...
I have two movies at the festival. One of them is R.E.M.. It’s about “thoughts in your brain that make you go insane”. The other movie is called Bomen (Trees). It is inspired by a work from Anya Gallaccio called Some Dreams They Forgot, where you walk in a wood and suddenly you see trees standing upside down. Very surrealistic.
Financing your movie?
When I make a movie I always try to do everything myself. Acting, filming, editing and of course, financing.
New Media; a challenge for film makers?
Internet is very useful for distributing your films. There are a lot of websites where you can find information about festivals and submitting your movies.
Influences?
Artists that inspire me are Matthew Barney, Paul McCarthy, and Anthony Goicolea. They show us other, more interesting worlds. Dark worlds…
Which film related websites do you frequent?
Interesting filmsites are Cinema.nl, Withoutabox and Reelport.
Individual film making or co-operation?
Whenever I can, I do the whole process of film making myself. I like every part of the process. I like to think about a concept, and when I have come up with something I want to film it immediately. And then I cannot wait to watch the material and edit it.
Did you ever had another ambition in life than to become a filmmaker?
I am very realistic in the fact that I won’t become rich and famous, or even that I am able to make a living out of filmmaking. I make movies because for me it is a way of expressing myself. So I could say that in some way it is a necessity.
Digital or classic?
Digital, it’s easy and cheap. I have a Sony DCR-PC8E Digital Handycam. It’s a really small camera.
