Who is Tina Willgren?
I am an artist, living in Stockholm, Sweden. My works, primarily videos, sounds, installations and happenings take their starting points in the sensory experiences of life in the contemporary world. I would like my works to resemble the nocturnal dreams that society might have.
How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
I got hooked on video during my art school years. One thing I loved about it was that the camera captures images of the real world, which are possible to manipulate. It is as though the video becomes a spot where the outer world and mental processes can meet.
How long do you usually work on one project?
It depends on the project, it can be anything in between one week and 10 months.
Do you carefully plan the production process or do you work more intuitive?
I do both. Plans often take me to places i didn´t know before. But they seldom work out the way I thought they would, and then I just skip them, and do what seems best at the moment. It is also nice to have some surprises along the way.
How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
As important as the image I believe. I use both samples and synthesized sounds.
Where do you get your ideas or inspiration from?
I get a lot of ideas when doing tedious and boring work. It is as if the mind wants to get out of the current situation and starts fantasizing about all the extremely interesting things that will happen in the future.
How does content relate to the form of your work?
I was never any good at separating the two.
Did the web changed your view on art, or your career?
It meant a lot to me just after I graduated in 2005. The possibility to apply to video festivals and exhibitions via online calls made me feel a little bit more independent of local circumstances. It felt as if there was always a place for my work somewhere out there.
What is your next project about?
I am planning a happening for an exhibition in Warsaw in February, which will have the contemporary preoccupation to document, interpret and record reality as its theme.
