Harm Zon - Blox

6:00, 2006

BLOX started off as an experiment. It’s about movement, composition, colours, nature and animation. The main object was to combine nature and machine. This is done by creating an image of nature that can only be made with a machine. Namely; the computer.

Interview

Who am I?
Im 25 and I make animation and visual fx. I finished school in 2004 (St. Joost Academy, Breda). I studied animation there, I specialized myself in 3D-animation. Short after that I began to do projects that involve animation and compositing.
I worked for several documentaries and movies, but I also get involved in Art projects.
With a lot of coffee, cigarettes and endurance it’s a doable.

Why filmmaking?
I’ve always been interested in movies. I tried to watch as many as I can.
So naturally I got involved in making them myself. The reason I do animation is the total control I get over everything. Light, movement, colours and rhythm.

BLOX is about...
BLOX started off as an experiment. It’s about movement, composition, colours, nature and animation. The main object was to combine nature and machine. This is done by creating an image of nature that can only be made with a machine. Namely; the computer.

New Media; a challenge for film makers?
New Media is undoubtedly the future. Of course traditional Filmmaking will stay, but because it’s getting cheaper and easier to make things digital, a lot of people will embrace that option to make there dreams come true. And because the way of filmmaking is evolving so are the ways of displaying them.
On the other hand, I like a good cinema.

Do your films have style, just as some painters have?
I don’t know if I have an own style, but colours, rhythm, sound and ’cleanness’ of the image is very important to me. I always try to make animations like they are ’meant’ to be that way.

Influences?
The work of Norman McLaren, Rosto A.D. And Oskar Fischinger never sees to amaze me.
Another big influence for me is computergames. Not only did these lift the standards for digital filmmaking, but also they can let you experience a world of it’s own and let you walk in that world without telling a clear of complicated story.

Which film related websites do you frequent?
Mainly CG-SOCIETY for the cool inside info and eye candy and IMDB as resource site. But foremost i like to watch movies and not read about them.

Individual film making or co-operation?
I tried both. I like working on someone else’s project. I let him or her do the thinking and I act like the ’working horse’. But on my own projects it’s Me, Myself and I.

Your plans and dreams...
I’d like to make a film with the cooperation of musicians. I make animation, they watch it and make sound on it, I listen to the sound, make animation on it, etc.

Digital or classic?
Digital for sure. I don’t have the patience to do it the classical way. And my drawings suck.

Other work
I have my own small portfolio on hvanzon.cgsociety. This is till my own site http://www.harmmaaktmooi.nl is finished.
