Interview

Who is Paul Wolterink?
Citizen of Europe’s largest city Holland. Work areas: graphic design & interdisciplinary projects.

Why filmmaking?
The engine can’t run without oil.

Your film is about...
A boy living on the remote Caribbean island of Colon, Panama. He built (copied from pictures) hundreds of airplanes out of just paper. To escape from daily life he flies ‘off’ the island, to all destinations... Up to that moment he never really flew in a real airplane.

Financing your movie?
A five dollar super 8 cam, two Kodak reels, one Cola and a sandwich. Devoted friends.

New Media; a challenge for film makers?
Users can decide to hear & watch what they want, themselves. People who create works can add their work (for free) to the web. Individuals can make themselves visable, without even being curated.

Do your films have style, just as some painters have?
Each project asks for another approach, and thereby asks for different solutions. Anything can happen. Others may see ‘style’ in my work.

Influences?
There are so many. I recently got caught by ‘Civil Status’ directed by the Alina Rudnitskaya from Russia. A beautiful, simple, happy and sad documentary about birth, marriage and death.

Which film related websites do you frequent?
All kinds of platforms really.

Individual film making or co-operation?
Both have their advantages. Solo, because some projects just have to be done solo.
Co-operative to handle more stuff and to avoid getting involved with too many tasks. Also the challenge to work with people I admire for their work and personality.

Plans and dreams...
Huge list of thingies spread over various areas. I like how I work now (graphic design and sound/ image projects). I want to continue working on beam projections for public spaces, like the ‘Fitnessclub Stadsschouwburg’ project earlier this year.

Did you ever have another ambition in life than to become a filmmaker?
Win Wimbledon and meet the duchess of Kent.

Digital or classic?
Use the one that fits your current idea best.
