Sibylle Trickes - Meme’s

9:29, 2009, Experimental

My video deals with our self-perception. We often act like completely different persons depending on the person we communicate with: We behave different with our chief or with our family. The different aspects of our personality are represented in my video by only one person . The splitting of one´s self is demonstrated via multiplication of this main character. I pick the entity of a person as a main theme. Are we the same as we were at the age of 13 for example or as we will be at the age of 70? When we are awake or asleep? When we are happy or distressed?

Interview

Who is Sibylle Trickes?
I am 27 years old and studied art at the State Academy for Arts Stuttgart. There I mainly did painting, drawing and installations. As a second subject i studied cross-media art, where I started to do video and performance works. I also will work as a teacher for arts by next year.

Your film is about?
My video deals with our self-perception. We often act like completely different persons depending on the person we communicate with: We behave diffenrent with our chief or with our family. The different aspects of our personality are represented in my video by only one person. The splitting of one´s self is demonstrated via multiplication of this main character. I pick the entity of a person as a main theme. Are we the same as we were at the age of 13 for example or as we will be at the age of 70? When we are awake or asleep? When we are happy or distressed?

The person in my work finds herself in different situations and surroundings. She meets other aspects of her personality, communicates with them, poses questions and depicts the different variations of the self. The person moves through landscapes and spaces that are partly designed with computer and partly assembled by various real elements. Cyclic elements emerge through little repeated movements. They symbolize the different behaviour patterns we use. I repeat certain actions and set them into different combinations. The fact, that I am the actor in the video makes clear that I show my personal point of view. I use objects of my personal surrounding in the video. But the character in the video and her actions are pretty general, so that it can stand for many other people too.

How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
I started making videos when I was studying cross-media art in 2007 until march 2009. I have an educational background in art, as i studied art before ( paintin, drawing..)and learned some theoretical background about film whilst that.

Where do you get your ideas or influences from?
I get my ideas from different things I see. From art to nature, my personal thoughts and feelings and mass-culture.

How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
Sond is important in my videos. I mainly create it myself out of sounds produced by my voice, keyboard etc.. Sometimes I also use existing music, when something seems to fit my purpose and transports a feeling for example.

How do you finance your projects (by yourself, sponsors or subsidy)?
I finance my projects by myself (most of the videos) or they are payed projects (I did a group project for an opera)

Nowadays everyone with the right equipment can create videoart, good, bad or ugly?
It has a negative and a positive aspect. With the immense existing video production it´s getting more difficult to find good things that interest you, but there´s also a certain new culture for example of the youtube films that broaden the video landscape in my opinion and democratise the art scene.

Video broadcasting platforms on the internet, why or why not?
Yes, absolutely! It creates a complete new video-culture that reflects our society. From trivial videos about make-up tutorials, to the psychological emissions of a fat guitar playing teenager, to the selfmade

In what category would you place your work; cinema or art. And is there a difference between those?
I would place it to the category of art because it does not tell a certain linear story but picks single aspects like some feelings, thoughts and expresses them through the media video.

How important is the reaction to your film by the audience?
I´m doing the videos not mainly for an audience but to express something I am interested in. Of course I like the audience to understand it and find their own relation to it. If it is a work for a performance or a theater play I would like to create an interaction between the playing/subject of the play and the video and a widening of the subject and the physical room through the video.

What is your next project about?
My next project is about the interaction between people and its misfunction. As shown in TV talkshows in the afternoons, people shout at each other, can´t express their feelings properly and talk at cross-purposes. I made a sound collage with collected expressions and will create the visualisation of it through video.
