Who is Judith van der Made?
A visual artis musician performer residing in the hague
What is Starparty about?
Its a story about an alien that goes sunbathing in zuiderpark the hague and forgets her/his/its karaoke machine. It turns out the machine has enchanting powers and makes people dance & sing.... But not without consequence.....
How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
I started with film during the preparations of my first movement performance, i was video-ing a lot of preparation trainings for research, and after editing the final performance into a video was mesmerised how much more exact i could get my initial idea across, by being able to layer, mix various aspects in a slightly different way and so on.
From editing my performances into video i started getting more into mixing performance with other footage, which led me to animation and music videos. Next to that i discovered celluloid, and also got more into film ; super 8, 16mm.
I mostly learned from doing trial and error, and all the courses that cross my path and can learn me more, as stop motion animation, after fx, scenario writing, and lots of super 8 and 16mm workshops. But also movement classes like body weather, and even hiphop and modern dance give me more insight in the work i want to make and how to get more grip on it.
Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts you use and what is important to you?
I am very much a DIY artist that works with the means she has close to her, i do a lot of camera work myself as i work from images in my head, but there are a few friends who i trust will shoot exactly what i want without having to talk too much about it. I work mostly with non actors, but i choose them not randomly, i just know which people i want for which roles. Music is always an important aspect of my videos, although the music i put under the video is not always present during the shoot. I have a storyboard, but also love to use unexpected events that pop up, and then shoot both, my idea and the unexpected one, later in the editing i choose which one fits best or mix the 2.
Themes &concepts change, cause i keep changing and growing too.
What’s important for me is that i succeed in materialising the images in my head, transform the ... Lets say ghostimages onto video or celluloid.
How long do you usually work on one project?
That really varies, sometimes its done in a month even a week sometimes, when u make something during a workshop for example, but some projects i work on for a year even more.
Sometimes a work grows, images accumulate and sometimes all the images are there from the start and i just have to get them materialised.
It also depends on how long it takes to make the soundtrack cause i mainly do this myself and with a few other musicians, i very seldom use already existing or finished tracks.
This video is an exception, cause here i used part of a song of yespinkpink
Do you carefully plan the production process or do you work more intuitive?
If i work with other people i try to plan the production, as people mainly work with me because they like it and there is no money, i want to work as sharp as i can time wise, although i also want them to enjoy the work and use their, lots of times, great own interpretations of things.
If i work alone and there is no deadline i mix it more, i always like to work from a plan, but sometimes the images lead you into another direction that is is so strong that it would be stupid not to go with it.
How does the title relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?
This tile is the name of the karaoke machine that’s used in the video, and as it was a kinda party and all the actors where stars i thought it was the perfect title for this video.
This also varies a lot how to find the fitting title, i hardly ever know it ahead it bubbles up while editing.
How do you finance your projects (by yourself, sponsors or subsidy)?
Mainly by myself
How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
Sound is a major aspect in my works.
I almost always create my own sounds or together with friends.
Sometimes part of the concept of the work is working with found footage and then i also use foundfootage sounds.
But if i want to use existing sounds and it is not part of the concept i try to recreate them.
How would you describe contemporary videoart?
Contemporary & always in state of change
What possibilities of the web are yet to be explored?
Many
Did the web changed your view on art, or your career?
:)
Where would you place your work; cinema or art. And what is the difference between those according to you?
I would place it in both, but experience taught me i roam in the video art corner
U should ask the curators
How important is the reaction to your film by the audience?
Its always nice when your work is being screened.
What is your next project about?
I have various next projects.
One is a gangsta video and one is about glitching in 1.moving image as film and 2. As in body movement
Also i am working on the next stage of a performance installation with my collective BIDA called prepostbypass, the rooms are not moving but we are, a grid, a seemingly independent autonomous functioning system, but is it.....
