Interview

Who is Julien Taillez?
It’s a french guy, he can be shy, but it’s a secret. He wears cool eyeglasses and listen to cool music. He is motion designer in an agency called DDB° in Paris. And he loves to take pictures everytime.

What is your film about?
This film had not a real topic, or maybe a documentary purpose about this famous place in Paris, la place du Tertre, it’s in Montmartre, I like to go there, it’s friendly. Basically, you can see some tourists and some locals, I catch some mood, and I wanted to make the viewer feel what is going one.. With all the littles moments, they are all happening together..

How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
I did studies in art of cinema and editing class for 4 years, movies are like a puzzle for the story teller. It’s fascinating. This aspect is my favorite, with editing, to create something besides the story, for the viewer. I started by doing short movies with friends from cinema school and we begin to shoot movies, with pro lights, like we learned at school, and after that, I had a demo reel with littles Vfx I did on other projects, and could be hired as a motion designer in Paris.

Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts and what is important to you?
What is important to me in my work is about the light and colors, to respect the natural process, maybe it’s too academic. It’s important sometimes, not to lie with changing the pictures, colors, make a matte painting, remove something, but sometimes it’s part of the story, and I want to be invisible like glass so I try to make the more invisible but to keep the real thing. I like the concept of reality that makes you travel, dream, without you noticed it.

How long do you usually work on one project?
One project is I think a month time, but I don’t really how long it can be.. You never know, if a personal project will be long or not. I try not to do it more than 3 or 4 month..

Where do you get your ideas or inspiration from?
So I love music, and I love photography. When I listen a song, I always imagine shots, people, lights.. A feeling.. I want to make that feeling visible with photography or movie. I have idols like a famous photographer Bruno Aveillan who makes amazing pictures, or David Hamilton and his glows.. I look abstract photography with a human presence. Maybe because it reminds me how I see the world without my glasses. It’s important to have something that keeps you in mind your world around you. But opposite to that, there is a thing that I love. It’s Terry Gilliam’s world, Brazil is my Bible. It’s this balance between real and dream that is awesome.

How does the title relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?
For most of the time, I try to find a title the more abstract possible who can resume the movie.. Yeah.. Strange.. Like a Philip K. Dick story.

How does content relate to the form of your work?
As I said, I like to be close to reality and to respect the material, so with a part of dream and reality, the content will shape my work because I want to respect it. In the mean time, for making a mood and a feeling, a reaction, I will not hesitate to destroy the material, only for the mood purpose, not for the fun of doing that.

What possibilities of the web are yet to be explored?
Interactions in music videos things.

Did the web changed your view on art, or your career?
I have a career because of the web, thanks of the web, so it’s a very cool and fast media to explore, for sharing many things, it’s so useful for me.

Does your work often circle the festival circuits, and do you visit festivals regularly?
Not often. Actually it is the second.

How do you finance your projects?
Personals projects are financed by myself. If there is anyone here.. Here is my mail :)

What are you working on now?
I am working on a "video mood summary postcard" of one of my trip to Colombia. I have to gestate that baby, I don’t want to make it too soon. It’s a very personal one. There is also a music clip, I shoot a part of the making of, we directed all the project (clips, website) with my "dream team", it’s about one of new Matthieu Ouaki’s song. It should be released soon in the two months coming.
