Who is Jan Wouter van Reijen?
I graduated at Filmacademy in 1966. I worked as a director, editor, sound man, cinematographer and I did lots and lots of documentaries.
Why filmmaking?
As kid, I dreamt of being a magician. I choose a profession closest to being a magician.
Your film is about...
My films are about watching and the question: how can you reveal something that wasn’t visible before… How can you hand a way of looking, without (verbal) explanation.
Financing your movie?
Especially my art films and documentaries are highly dependent on subsidy…. Zéker voor kunstzinnige films.
New Media; a challenge for film makers?
I have no idea… It seems to me no more challenging than everything that was already here; the old media. I think there are other standards for making a film for the internet than for cinema… Some films are only worthwhile on big screen. It takes a new way of filming.
Individual film making or co-operation?
I did it all. I worked with big crews and all my myself. I prefer to work in a small team of people, if the budget allows me to. When I’m working alone, that’s almost every time due to lack of cash.
Your plans and dreams...
Go on like this for the next 20 or 30 years.
Did you ever have another ambition in life than to become a filmmaker?
No.
Digital or classic?
Film, 35 of 16mm is still the best there is. Digital video has indeed advantages film, but you loose so much of the emotion. A video production is usually much cheaper, so sometimes there’s no alternative. When working on long projects, it’s a must to have your own equipment. So, besides sound and light equipment, I nowadays also have a DV-Cam.
