Who is Gabriel Orenstein?
Mix Media Artist. Painter and Video Artist.
Born in Uruguay, studied art in Montevideo Uruguay.
Continue studies in Sao Paulo Brazil, at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado and Universidade Mackenzie.
Now lives & works in Miami, USA.
National and International participation in Painting and Video Art.

What is Ocean of dreams about?
The video is about the collective consciousness forming an ocean of mental dreams in a meditation state of mind. I believe the best way to experience the video is to merge into the waving images and sounds, using headphones can increase the experience.

How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
Painting is my first contact with art and still in my blood for more than 40 years.
I start scratching on film in 1981 (super 8 to 35mm)
That experience of painting/drawing frame by frame on celluloid
Help me to understand the basics of animation & motion.
Later using computers I have the opportunity to incorporate
Painting and other concepts into video.
I build the videos same way i paint, in other words video-film is the extension of my paintings.
I enjoy both the same.

Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts you use and what is important to you?
I silence my mind in order to start a new project,
Then in an abstract way I navigate in visions, meditation is a great tool to me.
If I receive in meditation a feeling or experience I translate it in images, same
A musician composes music.
So the videos come to me by segments and the sequences starts the composition
In an abstract way. I don’t need to understand what is, I just trust the intuition.
What is important is to find a map a place to go and flow into the consciousness.

How long do you usually work on one project?
All the time I can, last night I start Am then I went to sleep next day Am.
So 10-14 hours is a productive day.
Usually a short video takes me about 60 to 100 hours.

Do you carefully plan the production process or do you work more intuitive?
100% intuitive.

How does the title relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?
The title is a key to enter the work, is inside the work.

How do you finance your projects (by yourself, sponsors or subsidy)?
Video art by myself and collectors, so far,
Motion design also helps to pay the bills.

How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
Sound to me is the mood/ ambiance.
I enjoy creating the sounds, at the same time I have great friends who are extreme professionals
Always collaborating.

How would you describe contemporary videoart?
Hmmm, interesting question...
To me is like cooking: it taste good or not.
Water and sugar is not a lemonade.

What possibilities of the web are yet to be explored?
Integrating and expanding the technology is unlimited.
The walls can be screens interacting with your thoughts.
Holography can be the next....

Did the web changed your view on art, or your career?
Positive, I’m here.

Where would you place your work; cinema or art. And what is the difference between those according to you?
Is all one to me, you go to the movies and watch a 120 mints of art
You watch a short film is like caviar in your mouth that last a few minutes.

How important is the reaction to your film by the audience?
I do my best in an honest way, hope some will enjoy it.

What is your next project about?
I’m working on a 3D sequence
About multiple perception.
Inside a train there are many cabins
With different situations of individuals
In their own journey of life.
And a landscape in motion were intuition is a the compass.
