Alessandro Amaducci - Electric self

4:00, 2008

A dancer in balance between darkness and light. Creativity and unconsciousness: in the subtle edge between dreams and reality stands the chance to come into the world. In the digital age computers can create languages and worlds, so maybe they have an idea of the world, maybe they make dreams. Inside the cave of the technological unconsciousness there is the electric self: a world apart that produces images of the inner world.

Interview

Who is Alessandro Amaducci?
I’m a videoartist and professor at the University of Torino, Italy.

Your film is about?
The inner self of the technology, and the body as the place where different imageries collide.

How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
I studied in University, but I learned to use analog and digital technologies by myself.

Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts and what is important to you?
I’m trying to provoke emotions using images and sounds.

Where do you get your ideas or influences from?
Mainly from history of art and photography. But I like to find inspirations also from the "mainstream" and pop imagery. Also esotherical culture is a important visual root of my personal imagery.

How does the title relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?
Often title comes first, then I make the video, and sometimes it happens the opposite. The title is the first key to understand the meaning of the work.

How does content relate to the form of your work?
Content and form are strictly related: I still believe in the power of symbols and in the fact that every image (even the more abstract) has a deep meaning.

How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
I’m also a musician, so I compose the music of my videos. It is very important to guide the audience in to the right mood.

How do you finance your projects (by yourself, sponsors or subsidy)?
By myself.

Nowadays everyone with the right equipment can create videoart, good, bad or ugly?
It’s not important how many people can do videoart. The most important thing is to have something to say, so, let’s try to say it.

What possibilities of the web are yet to be explored? Which dangers do you see ahead?
For now the web is a big archive. Often not so interesting, but it works very well as an archive of imageries. Like all the new technologies, there are dangers, but without dangers there are no changes.

Video broadcasting platforms on the internet, why or why not?
It is the future, so yes.

In what category would you place your work; cinema or art. And is there a difference between those?
Cinema can be a form of art, and art can be cinematic. But I realize videos, not films. The meaning of the word "cinema" and "videoart" are now very indefinite. Maybe we have to use the word cinema as its primitive meaning (moving images) with moving sound. I work on images and sound, I dont’ care if it’s cinema or art.

How important is the reaction to your film by the audience?
Very important. It’s always a wonderful experience to know the audience, and to feel its reactions. For this reason I work also in theater and in dance performances.

What is your next project about?
A more traditional project of a digital movie inspired by an italian graphic novel.
