Who is Eva Wijers?
A young video-artist with wide interests.
What is Incubate about?
Incubate is made of videofootage. I tried to make one person out of all the faces I found in the footage.
How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
I studied Fine Art at AKV St. Joost in Breda. I gratuated in 2008 with a video-installation called ’AlsOf’ (AsIf).
Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts you use and what is important to you?
I try explore the vague borderline of the normal and the absurd in our daily reality. Does ’authentic behaviour’ even exist?
How long do you usually work on one project?
Can’t really answer that, depends on the project.
Do you carefully plan the production process or do you work more intuitive?
Intuitive.
How does the title relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?
In this case the video was made for the Incubate festival, so that was an easy one. But the title also fits because in the video different persons are put together to create one new person. You could say this new person is ’incubated’.
Where do you get your ideas or inspiration from?
Daily life.
How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
Sound is very important because it’s decisive for the atmosphere of the work. For me, the sound must be more than just some elevator music because it’s ’fun’. Sound and image should intensify each other.
How does content relate to the form of your work?
For me video is the best medium because it enables me to create a world that looks simular to the ’real’ world, but at the same time you’re able to make your own rules and confuse the spectator.
What possibilities of the web are yet to be explored?
I guess a lot, but I’m not really that active on the net... Maybe I should be...
Did the web changed your view on art, or your career?
I’ll answer this one later... Ch
Where would you place your work; cinema or art. And what is the difference between those according to you?
I guess art, but I’d like to move closer to cinema. For me there is no strict line between those two, just a big grey area. The only thing I could think of is that cinema-video’s always have a clear beginning and ending, where this is not always so clear in art-video’s. Next to that, in my opinion (or prejudice) cinema-movies can be shown as a one-screen-projection anywhere around the world. Art-video’s on the other hand can contain more screens and are often more dependent from the location they are shown at. But of course this is not entirely true.... Let’s just a appreciate the grey area!
What is your next project about?
Creating a tension between the reality and make-believe in one videowork by using cinematic techniques.
