Interview

Your film is about?
On 1:58 AM in South Korea, I fall into a monologue watching the lights of the signboard at dawn. Most of young artists including me might have worries about their future. The night which supposed to be tranquil atmosphere, is twinkled with signboards all over the city. However, my mind was contrasted with colorful lights. A letter by letter of the signs… engrave in my mind.

How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
My major is photograph art. So I had many opportunities to deal with media work.

Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts you use and what is important to you?
I am very interested in rapid changing and developing of the contemporary world. I want to try to create fresh images every time. I enjoy to trace the colors and the sounds which we usually cannot get easily. So, especially the video work for me is very useful material.

How long do you usually work on one project?
Although it depends on project, I try to finish one work as soon as possible to start new other work.

Do you carefully plan the production process or do you work more intuitive?
Usually, my work style is somewhat intuitive. But in case of this project, there need to have long time plan because there were many source for making procreate images.

How does the title relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?
The title was came up automatically. The signboards themselves were very important source as well as specific time of 1:58 am when the idea appeared.

Where do you get your ideas or inspiration from?
Usually, the idea emerges during strolling at dawn. My brain was full of negative worries and I happen to see the all the flash signboards.

How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
The sound of noisy downtown is in contrast to my lonely heart. I felt the electronic noise from signboards was similar with my mind which is not only lonely but also tormented.

How important is the reaction to your film by the audience?
I try to reflect the common feeling of other artists as well as same generation’s anxiety about their situation.

What is your next project about?
With various colors, shapes and sounds, I have plan to manipulate images with computer tools. This means, I will fabricate the unexpected world from the real world.
