Love…
Financing your movie?
I Love You So… was made as an assignment that was given to me by the Starting From Scratch super8 film festival that took place in De Balie, Amsterdam in 2004. A few filmmakers were given only one super8 Kodak film, 2 weeks before the festival took place. We had to make a film with it and think about editing inside the camera because the film would be developed by the festival and shown immediately, without the possibility to edit… I was extremely lucky in many ways. First the light I used caught fire and most of the camera went up in flames, fortunately the film survived… Than, later in the process I had to take the film out of the camera, in order to practice the turning shot with me and my former girlfriend lying on the grass… I of course forgot to watch how much film I already used when taking out the cassette. I had no idea when to start shooting the titles, but fortunately I gambled just right, my name is about the last thing visible. At the première I was able to present the film with the song played on a Fischer Price recordplayer on batteries…
New Media; a challenge for film makers?
No New Media before the old ones are finished… New Media has no meaning, but the future is digital…!!
Influences?
It must have been Clean, Shaven – Lodge Kerrigan (Canada, 1994, 80 min.) that gave me the understanding of the importance of moving images. The film reflects the reality in a way it became my reality. Stanley Kubrick explains it this way: ‘In a moment of time, too short to be measured, space turned and twisted upon itself’.
Individual film making or co-operation?
Since most people are not very well educated, I prefer to hold on to my own criteria…
Future...
To make an experimental fiction film in space…
I would like more people to understand the importance of cinema; cinema is like fire; mysterious and devastating, at the same time the origin of everything… A surrogate for the gods, just as superfluous as necessary. Chaos in the order and the other way around. Cinema is a culturally related expression in time and space of a new reality that came to light. Cinema is a never before observed personal insight, an individual discovery of a new perspective on life, love and death..
