Who is Marta Daeuble?
I am Czech artist living in the UK from 1997. After completing BA fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art, London, UK in 2004 I have been working mainly on experimental drawings, paintings and stop motion animations. I am part of the Open Hand and Open Space Studios in Reading, UK and working as a Secondary Art Teacher.
Your film is about?
All my films closely relates to drawing and painting I have made previously. They represent my state of mind at the time I am working on the animation. I don’t prepare any storyboards; just let my memory and imagination work instinctively with the images. Book talks about my journey from the Czech Republic to the UK reflecting the difficulties in growing up in different society, learning from changes personally and politically.
How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
I have started making animations at the university when taking my Fine Art course, mainly because I needed more than still images, like a 3rd dimension, to better show my intentions in my work.
Where do you get your ideas or influences from?
I work on very personal level. Everything I go through somehow influence the work I am making. I try to be as spontaneous as possible and aim for immediate ideas and actions letting my instincts and feelings lead the way.
How does the title relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?
The title is the Book, the Book is the work. Generally I have difficulties to come out with titles...
How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
Sound is very important for me as it set the mood for the film. I choose music very rarely and aim to rather use sounds I record. But for the Book, having music just felt the right think to do.
How do you finance your projects (by yourself, sponsors or subsidy)?
My films are very low budget and I have been financing them myself so far.
Nowadays everyone with the right equipment can create videoart, good, bad or ugly?
It is not about the equipment or simplicity but about the ideas in my opinion. Owning a pencil and paper doesn’t mean that you can create wounderful picture.
In what category would you place your work; cinema or art. And is there a difference between those?
I am not sure about categorization. I have been working in many different fields and feel that it is not that important where I show. For me the most important is to make the work and then have possibilities to show it to the public in any opportunity at cinemas, art galleries, web or elsewhere..
How important is the reaction to your film by the audience?
I am quite apprehensive when I show my film for the first time. My work is both personal and very experimental so I do often worry that people will be confused and may not be able to relate to it.
What is your next project about?
I am working on many drawings and paintings but find animations the most difficult to produce at the moment. It is very time consuming and requires lots of concentration. However I have started new animation call "Heads" which relates to beauty and representation of the female’s place in society. I am hoping to have it completed sometime next year.
