Rozemarijn Westerink - La sirene

7:10, 2006, Animation

La Sirene is made before I went to Japan. The animation is inspired by Japanese traditional art, combined with the usual themes in my work, such as nature/culture, reality/fantasy, threat/spell. Within these themes I often use landscapes in which animals or creatures that are half men/half animal play a huge role. I try to create a new context by putting elements coming from memories of personal experiences and aspects coming from religion and modern technology. When I come back from Japan I will make another film, as a reaction on La Sirene.

Interview

Who is Rozemarijn WesterinkI am born in 1982 in Bennekom, The Netherlands. From 2000 to 2004 I studied at Arnhem Institute for the Arts and graduated in drawing, painting and sculpture.
In september 2005 I started Post St Joost Autonoom Breda/Den Bosch, Master of Fine Arts, because I wanted to explore new possibilities of making work in a new environment, and to hear new visions on my work. And of course to develop my work as an artist.
One of the new things I experimented with was animation. In my work I always start from drawing. From there I make other drawings, paintings and 3d installations. I am experimenting with my drawings by exploring the possibilities to see them "moving" in video, together with sound.

La Sirene is the story of a mermaid, moving between different worlds, travelling into several landscapes in which she discovers the beauty of it and sometimes experiences the threats of it too.

Tell us about your style and techniqueBy doing animation I make the drawings myself and doing the filming and montage myself too. In the future I would like to work together with musicians to explore the possibilities of sound for my films. I also want to experiment with animation in the form of an installation, with different projections in a space, where the different projections can respond to each other.
For me, putting my drawings into video is a really satisfying way of working. It opens new doors to experiment new media and interesting ways of presentation too.
