Sean Burn - Chekhov

2:22, 2006, Experimental

illness hospitalised me, made me homeless; on discharge i was placed in temporary accommodations. to stay well i created art reflecting my experiences; chekhov references how the arts / finding commonalities with other artists and not a physical building / structure are my true home. the film uses visual cut-ups animated in an act of art-brut that parallels the poetry and soundwork that form the aural track. chekhov incorporates culture-jamming techniques in my work, reclaiming / reworking / subverting existing material that tries insisting we buy into narratives i dont recognise. radical antipsychiatrists, deleuze/guattari talk about the lines ov our life - both the formal ones - the interstices - & also the more subliminal, curved lines that mark more personal, unique voyages. i follow these more subliminal, unique lines in chekhov

Interview

Who is Sean Burn?
Writer, performer, outsider artist based in the north east of England but having work shown across Europe.

Your film is about?
Mental health / mental illness - about surviving hospitalisations.

How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
I have absolutely no formal training but am an outsider artist in the true sense of the word.

Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts and what is important to you?
I return again and again obsessively to themes - the nature ov narratives, mental health, issues ov justice, psychogeographies.

How did the film come about? Everything (carefully) planned or more intuitive?
I work intuitively rather than planning carefully.

How do you finance your projects (by yourself, sponsors or subsidy)?
By myself - occasionally i get awards / residencies / commissions to make a piece of work.

New Media; a challenge for film makers?
Yup.

How does the internet influence contemporary art in general according to you?
Its a tool to be used (or abused) like any other.

What possibilities of the web are yet to be explored? Which dangers do you see ahead?
I"m not really in a position to comment as i dont use the web fully - its more when other people (such as the streaming festival offer opportunities).

YouTube? Why or why not?
Not for me.

Does your work often circle the festival circuits, and do you visit festivals regularly?
Yes my work does go on the festival circuit - i only get to go to those screenings i can get to (ie not too far away from my physical base).

Do you often meet and discuss with other film makers through the internet?
Not as much as i should.

How influential is the reaction to your film by the audience?
I like audience response very much; it means a lot to see people engaging critically with yr work and then debating it.

What is your next project about?
I have a residency later in the year to make an antiwar piece - i dont know more about it than that yet.
My website is www.gobscure.info so more info on me can be found there.
