Gillian Mciver - Postindustrial baroque

9:37, 2009, Experimental

’Postindustrial Baroque’ is a collage film made up of footage shot by different artists, in a wide variety of marginal sites and places in cities across Europe.

“Postindustrial Baroque” was initially going to be a film about urban exploration. But as we collected data and thought about how to make sense of these strange forays into the unknown places on our city streets, we realised that this film would be a poetic journey, not a documentary.

Inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s Poetics of Space, the film explores the lived experience of architectures and urban landscapes. We find what Henri Lefebvre has called the “special, still sacred, quasi-religious and in fact almost absolute” territory within the marginal wastes of the city.

And so Postindustrial Baroque joins the Luna Nera collection of films about strange encounters, performative acts, explorations and sojourns in unusual places.
