Your film is about?
Incompleteness leads to coloured perspective.
Stealing a moment from the inner world of three women in different phases of their lives. With the parallel, the longing for sanctuary, security and love. The camera observes them shamelessly as they expose themselves.
How did you start with film? And do you have an educational background in art or film?
This film was made with the financial support of the Rotterdam Film Fund as part of the Rotterdam Shorts 2007. We got an amount of € 40.000 to create a short film. Which was my first time to work with an budget of this proportion. In the end 18 people participated on the film. Which was a complete new experience for me.
My educational background is art.
Could you explain how you work, what themes or concepts and what is important to you?
If I should write something general about my work it would be this:
The human plays the central role with the focus on their intrinsic thinking world. I see us people as ‘work in progress’.
Where do you get your ideas or influences from?
Life in all its aspects; meeting people, learning, reading, watching, suffering, traveling etc. Etc.
How does the title relate to the work, and how do you find a fitting title?
First the title was; Woman in front of a camera. But in the process or maybe already during the workshop the title changed in just ’Woman’.
How does content relate to the form of your work?
For me the concept is the first and most important aspect. The form should fit accordingly. But that is not necessarily and always true.
How important is sound in film, and if you use sounds, do you create your own or use existing?
Very important in my opinion. If I use sound then the sound is usually created especially for the film.
How do you finance your projects (by yourself, sponsors or subsidy)?
In the case of ’Woman’ it was subsidized by the Rotterdam Film Fund.
Nowadays everyone with the right equipment can create videoart, good, bad or ugly?
Good, bad and ugly. Freedom rules.
What possibilities of the web are yet to be explored? Which dangers do you see ahead?
I don’t see dangers. But I guess we are just in the beginning of it all.
Video broadcasting platforms on the internet, why or why not?
Why not
In what category would you place your work; cinema or art. And is there a difference between those?
There I come from an art background and my video’s have no particular narrative I would say art.
How important is the reaction to your film by the audience?
Both:
-Not important, because it does not really affect my work. The topics I am interested in, remain.
-Important, because I want to create the best art-video as possible. In my vision that would be a video that moves people, makes and makes them aware of themselves and/in relation to others.
What is your next project about?
There are several films I am working on.
At this moment I am staying 4 months in Barcelona:
- ’El Gato al Aqua’(Development)
- ’We all suffer’ (Post-production)
Until the 21st of December I go back for one week to do an artist in residency (a.i.r.) in Delft ’HET TIJDELIJK VERBLIJF’ id11.nl
- ’Time to Go’ (Development)
MISCELLANEOUS:
- ’Boys don’t cry’ (Post-production)
- ’I guess this is goodbye’ (Post-production)
